Praying Biblical Prayers for Our Children: Ephesians 1:15-23

Last week, I shared several posts about how to pray the Lord’s Prayer for ourselves. I also included a link to a two-page outline for praying the Lord’s Prayer: Your Daily Prayer Guide.

Several people asked me, “How do we pray for our children?” In response, I’ll be posting several times this week on how to pray biblical prayers for our children. Later in the week, we’ll explore how to pray the Lord’s Prayer for our children.

But first, we’ll look at a few examples of how to pray biblical prayers for our children from Ephesians. As a sample, here’s Paul’s powerful prayer in Ephesians 1:15-23, worded with the names of our children, Josh and Marie (who are young adults).

Praying Ephesians 1:15-23 for Our Children

15 For this reason, ever since I heard about Josh and Marie’s faith in the Lord Jesus and Josh and Marie’s love for all the saints,

16 I have not stopped giving thanks for Josh and Marie, remembering Josh and Marie in my prayers.

17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give Josh and Marie the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that Josh and Marie may know him better.

18 I pray also that the eyes of Josh and Marie’s heart may be enlightened in order that Josh and Marie may know the hope to which he has called them, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

19 and that Josh and Marie may know his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength,

20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,

23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

How is this prayer different from what you typically pray for your children?
