5 Things to Do Before Leaving Your Church: The Pastor’s Edition

An Insightful List by Pastor Thabiti Anyabwile

Recently I summarized for you and linked to a very insightful blog post by Pastor Thabiti Anyabwile that every church member must read: 5 Things to Do Before Leaving Your Church

You can read my summary post here

Pastor Anyabwile now has a new post that is also well worth reading: 5 Things to Do Before Leaving Your Church: The Pastor’s Edition

Pastor Anyabwile notes that:

“In my last post on leaving well when you’re a member of a church several respondents pointed out that pastors often leave churches in a very poor way. Sadly, they’re correct. We’ve all heard the horror stories about pastors who announce their departure after the morning service and U-Haul arrives first thing Monday morning. Or, we’re familiar with the all-too-painful accounts of pastors who apparently take a scorched earth approach to leaving, destroying everything they touch before they leave. We can add to that those pastors who leave by splitting the church. The pain abounds.”

Please read the entire post at Thabiti’s site, Pure Church here

His five things for a pastor to do, which he elaborates on in his post, are:

1. Talk with Your Fellow Leaders When You Begin to Think Seriously about Leaving

2. Be Genuinely Open to Counsel and Correction

3. Resolve Any Conflicts Before Leaving the Church

4. Plan Your Transition and Succession with the Elders

5. Express Your Appreciation to the Church and Say “Goodbye” to Friends and Saints
