5 top Christian blog posts of the week—posts by Jay Adams, Kevin DeYoung, Heath Lambert, Justin Holcomb & more.

Kevin DeYoung: 10 Errors to Avoid When Talking about Sanctification and the Gospel

There is much discussion and even debate these days about progressive sanctification and the gospel. Kevin DeYoung’s always balanced, biblical, and historical (church history) perspective has been very helpful to my thinking. Here’s another example well worth reading and re-reading: 10 Errors to Avoid When Talking about Sanctification and the Gospel

Jay Adams: Grow by Grace

Continuing the theme of sanctification, the gospel, and grace, Jay Adams weighs in with an exegetical and lexical argument for grace-empowered and grace-motivated effort in the sanctification process. Read Jay’s thoughts in Grow by Grace

Heath Lambert: Have You Been Burned by a NANC Counselor?

Heath Lambert is the Executive Director of the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC) which was formerly the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors (NANC). He writes a courageous post asking and responding to the question, Have You Been Burned by a NANC Counselor?

Tim Allchin: 3 Questions Every Biblical Counselor Should Ask about Psychiatric Medicine

I think this is a first. I’m recommending the comment section of a blog post! On the previous post by Heath Lambert, Tim Allchin responds and provides 3 Questions Every Biblical Counselor Should Ask about Psychiatric Medicine. This is a concise and balanced summary. You can read Tim’s summation in the comment section of Have You Been Burned by a NANC Counselor?

Justin Holcomb: Desiring the Kingdom

Justin Holcomb reviews James. K. A. Smith’s book Desiring the Kingdom. I was especially intrigued by the discussion of a biblical understanding of personhood. Often we teach the imago Dei as primarily meaning person-as-thinker. Smith asks what would happen to our model of spiritual formation if we saw the imago as person-as-lover or person-as-oriented-to-love-and-desire. Yes, it can be complicated to think through, but it is vital. And Justin does a great job of introducing Smith’s thoughts and the implication of them in Desiring the Kingdom: Book Highlights
